Pricing for a quick sale

Garage sale shoppers expect deep discounts, so used goods usually sell for a small fraction of their original retail price. This tool starts from a typical good-condition, few-years-old price for each item, then adjusts for the condition and age you pick.

The formula

Each suggested price is calculated as:

base price × condition factor × age factor

The result is rounded to a friendly garage-sale number (whole dollars, or 25¢ steps for small items) so it's easy to read on a sticker and easy to haggle.

Condition factors

• Like new — barely used, no flaws (×1.5)
• Good — light wear, fully working (×1.0)
• Fair — visible wear or minor issues (×0.6)
• Poor — heavily worn, for parts or projects (×0.35)

Age factors

• Under 1 year — ×1.3
• 1 – 3 years — ×1.0
• 3 – 7 years — ×0.75
• 7 – 15 years — ×0.55
• 15+ years — ×0.4 (some genuine antiques may be worth far more — research those separately)

Tips for the day

• Price things a touch high so there's room to haggle down.
• Group cheap items (books, mugs) into “fill a bag” deals to move volume.
• Mark clear prices on everything — unlabelled items often walk away unsold.
• Drop prices in the last hour to avoid packing things back up.
